But Juan Diego's experience on Tepeyac Hill changed all that.

The image of the pregnant, dark-skinned woman who called herself "she who crushes the serpent" instantly appealed to the natives. She was one of their own. In the days after the image miraculously appeared, the indigenous peoples traveled to see this sign from heaven.

The Bishop built a temporary shrine on Tepeyac Hill where the image could be venerated, and on Dec. 26, 1531, just two weeks after the apparitions, the image was brought to the Shrine in procession.
